Racing Victoria (RV) has signed as a partner of Australia’s leading equestrian event, the Melbourne International Horse Trials (MIHT), through its Off The Track program for retired racehorses. The MIHT, held at Victoria’s Werribee Park over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend (Friday, 6 to Monday, 9 June) attracts horses from across Australia, many of whom are former racehorses who have commenced a new life following their retirement from the track. Thoroughbreds have long been the Australian breed of choice for equestrian pursuits, dominating on the world stage including as a part of Olympic Games Gold Medal winning teams. Racing Victoria’s Equine Welfare Officer, Cara Kavanagh, is thrilled with the representation of off the track thoroughbreds at the Melbourne International Horse Trails and believes it is part of a wider trend across Victoria. “We’re thrilled to see so many retired racehorses entered to compete across all levels of competition,” Kavanagh said. “Thoroughbreds are the ideal equestrian athletes and posses many of the skills required to succeed, not only as eventers, but in all equestrian sports. “We’re seeing greater participation and some terrific results from retired racehorses at many events, both locally and abroad, with horses like Algebra and TS Jamaino representing the breed on the world stage.” Event Director, Michael Hands welcomed Racing Victoria as a partner of the Melbourne International Horse Trials, the oldest event of its kind in the southern hemisphere. “We look forward to showcasing life after the track with Racing Victoria through this year’s Melbourne International Horse Trials.”
In April this year, Racing Victoria’s Off The Track program presented its inaugural ‘Triequithon’ competition at Melbourne Racing Club’s Mornington Racecourse, testing the skills of 10 retired racehorses on raceday over an exhibition of dressage, cross-country and showjumping. A selection of the Triequithon horses and riders will also compete at the 2014 MIHT CCI1* class.
