Trying to sift through the many horses for sale to find your next horse can be a time-consuming challenge. That’s why we’ve come up with some great ways to help you save time when buying a horse.

Come Up with a Set List of Questions

When inquiring about a horse, you’ll generally have to ask some questions to find out if the horse is worth test riding. It’s likely that these questions will be the same, or at least similar, for most of the horses that you are interested in. To save yourself time, sit down and write up a list of questions. Save these questions on your computer so that you can copy and paste whenever you’re inquiring about a horse. It’s a great timesaver.

Always Get Video and Photos

Even if a horse sounds perfect, don’t take the time to go out and test ride him without seeing photos, and ideally videos, too. Photos and videos can reveal so much about a horse’s conformation, attitude, temperament, and athletic ability. It’s always worth asking for photos before you take the time out of your busy schedule to go see a horse.

Network, Network, Network

Don’t forget the power of networking. Let all of your equine connections know that you’re looking for a horse. You never know when someone may know of a horse for sale that may be your perfect partner.

Know Your Budget

It’s important that you take the time to determine your budget before you start looking at horses for sale. You don’t want to spend unnecessary time looking into horses that you can’t realistically afford. Though you may be able to negotiate a horse’s price down some, it’s important to realise what is realistic and what isn’t. This can help to keep you from wasting both your own and the seller’s time.

Involve Your Trainer

If you’re working with a trainer, then it’s a great idea to consult them during your search for a new horse. A trainer may be able to spot things in a horse’s photos and videos that you don’t notice. Their insights can help you to prioritise or decide against horses that you’re considering, saving you time in your search.

Buying a horse takes some time, but the right horse for you is out there. These tips can help you to save time as you look at horses for sale.
